BabbleNet is a completely decentralized, peer-to-peer (P2P), real-time chat program that allows users to create an ad hoc chat network without connecting to or installing a central server. Basically, it is a cross between Gnutella and IRC. BabbleNet was developed in a modular way so that the chat functionality sits upon a generic P2P framework.
