SiteSearch is a dedicated search add-on that provides advanced search capabilities with a high level of ease-of-use, including automatic access control awareness, fast indexing based on Sitellite collections and not by spidering your web site (the traditional way), built-in usage statistics accessible via the Sitellite control panel, and best of all it requires no special PHP configuration, just like Sitellite. SiteSearch has three parts: an Apache Lucene-based server, a PHP front-end client for integrating into your web site, and the aforementioned statistics screen. The PHP front-end talks to the server, which is a small and fast Java application, through XML-RPC, thus eliminating the usual requirement of similar applications of either installing the PHP Java extension (which is still experimental), or one of various other dedicated search extensions, all of which require that you recompile PHP to run their application. With SiteSearch, weve brought scalable searching to where it should be, available to (just about) any web site.

2. ASP SiteSearch

ASP SiteSearch provides search engine capabilities to website. Developed to easily mold into any web design, you have many capabilities/choices in setting up the application on your site: - Filter for file extensions that you want searched - Exclude directories from being searched - Define number of results per page - Show/hide URL of page in search results - Search meta tags (or not) - Optionally use graphical paging buttons text links. Here are more specifics: ASP SiteSearch is for static pages; web pages that dont already have database interaction. It will not work in conjunction with other ASP code that communicates with a database. No database or data connection is used. This tool searches your pages in realtime, therefore the performance of the search is affected by how many pages are being searched as well as the capabilities of the web server. ASP SiteSearch is not recommended for use on a budget web server, but you will not have performance problems if used on a good web host.

Basically, it is a program that a web author can use to generate a searchable index of their web site. This searchable index can be in the form of a javascript file that gets searched on the client, or it can be in the form of an XML file that can be searched on the server. A client-side javascript approach to searching will work over the web or even in server-less environments like CD-ROM, hard disk or floppy disk. No programming is necessary - support files are included with SiteSearch Indexer to help you implement your search
